Molecular Halloween Chemistry with Dr Josh Smalley | New Scientist Live 2025

When and where to discover molecular Halloween chemistry

On Sunday, 19th November, Dr. Josh Smalley, chemical biologist and finalist of The Great British Bake Off season 14, will be conjuring up his culinary chemistry at New Scientist Live 2025 at ExCeL London. His talk, “The Spooktacular Science of Baking,” promises to be a truly entertaining session with molecular Halloween chemistry.

Who is Dr. Josh Smalley?

Josh Smalley, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leicester, is the founder of the Science Kitchen, where he merges molecular science with baking to inspire students and the public alike. His work has been featured by the Royal Society of Chemistry, National Space Centre, and New Scientist, and he’s a familiar face at Asynt’s booth at ChemUK, where he’ll be returning in May 2026 to deliver live edible chemistry demos using Asynt’s DrySyn heating blocks, CondenSyn air condensers and stirrer hotplates.

Alongside Josh, at New Scientist Live you’ll find other amazing scientists such as Dr. Zoe Williams, Dr. Amir Khan, Big Manny and Chris Packham to name but a few.

It’s not all about the Halloween chemistry though…

These talks offer a deeper dive into how innovative science can shape our world, from sustainable lab practices to the scientific mysteries of everyday life. Whether you’re a researcher, educator, or science enthusiast, New Scientist Live 2025 is your chance to connect with the future of science.
