DrySyn Octo Evaluation: Heriot-Watt University – Parallel Inert Chemistry

DrySyn Octo Evaluation:

The Donnelly Lab is a young, dynamic, and growing research group within the Institute of Chemical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University. They develop innovative catalytic methodologies to transform sustainable feedstock chemicals into high-value materials. Their research is driven by expertise in catalysis, organic synthesis, and polymer chemistry, enabling groundbreaking advances in sustainable chemical innovation. Here’s their feedback on the DrySyn Octo.

Using The DrySyn Octo to Accelerate Sustainable Polymer Research

We are leveraging the DrySyn Octo parallel synthesis reactor to screen catalysts and reaction conditions for polymer backbone modification, enabling the design of new degradable polymers. This medium-throughput approach allows us to run multiple reactions simultaneously under precisely controlled conditions, dramatically reducing the time and resources needed to identify optimal pathways.

Why is this important? Traditional polymers are durable but often persist in the environment for decades, contributing to plastic pollution. By developing polymers with controlled degradability, we aim to combine performance with sustainability, creating materials that meet industrial needs while minimising long-term environmental impact.

The DrySyn Octo’s ability to handle diverse chemistries, in parallel, is critical for this work. It enables rapid exploration of reaction space, systematic optimisation of catalysts, and efficient generation of data to guide polymer design. This accelerates innovation and supports our broader goal of advancing circular and eco-friendly materials for the future.
