From intern to lab lead
How Northeastern University London is building sustainable teaching lab practice with Asynt CondenSyn® and the CondenSyn Distillation Adapter
THE CHALLENGEDaniela Brandao de Ceita (Dani), CoMENS Faculty Chemistry Technician and holder of an MRes in Organic Chemistry and Drug Discovery, runs the 1st year chemistry teaching lab at Northeastern University London. She is overhauling the lab, its practicals and its working practices while building the first year chemistry course, with second, third and fourth year students to follow. She needed equipment that would make practicals safer and more sustainable from the start.
THE SOLUTIONThe lab has been set up with the CondenSyn® waterless air condenser and the CondenSyn Distillation Adapter. The adapter allows CondenSyn to be used in a vertical orientation for distillation, so the same waterless approach covers distillation practicals as well as condensing. THE OUTCOMECondenSyn reduces water waste and the risk of flooding compared with a traditional water condenser, which matters in a teaching lab where many students work at once. It also enables the lab to remain clear of daisy-chain water tubing which presents trip hazards in addition to where it’s situated in the fume cupboard. |
