Fundraising fun for Cancer Research

Kerry Elgie Strawberry

We are very proud of our own Dr Kerry Elgie as every year she joins forces with her family (Team Wilson with Aunty Lorna and Uncle Robert!) to hold an annual Strawberry Tea Garden Party in aid of Cancer Research.  Kerry assures us that she mostly assisted with giving out scones and cups of tea and the hard work was done by her aunt and uncle!

This year they managed to raise over £1000!  Kerry has been speaking with Dr Ian Hardcastle and Prof Mike Waring within the Chemistry department at Newcastle University as they work directly on cancer research projects and it has been agreed that the funds raised will go directly to this lab.  If you’d also like to make a donation you can do so via the Northern Institute for Cancer Research’s page here: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/nicr/donate/

Mike shared a few words with us:

“”We are deeply touched by the efforts and generosity of Lorna and Robert Wilson and their friends in raising these funds. In the Northern Institute for Cancer Research based at Newcastle University, we run a drug discovery programme between a group of pharmacologists, bioscientists, structural biologists and medicinal chemists. We aim to develop new treatments for cancers which are currently poorly treated. This is obviously a very costly exercise requiring expensive equipment and consumables. Our programme is generously supported by Cancer Research UK and we are dependent on charitable funding for its success. Every penny that has been raised will be used to buy new equipment that will help us improve our capabilities and increase our chances of finding successful drugs.”

Well done, Team Wilson and Kerry – and many thanks to Mike, Ian and all those who are working hard to beat cancer!
